These are the changes that the membership believe would be "about time". Changes that would restore the respect of the membership in Local 793, and I agree.
"Two Terms and Out"
The majority of democractic systems have introduced this type of system as a safety net against corruption and misuse of funds. History has proven time and again that the longer the same people are in power, the greater the chances of this happening. I think we only have to look at our unions own history to see how very true this is.
"End Company Donations"
We have just started into our new agreement, and I believe it was the Poorest Settlement ever negotiated on behalf of the members. Our membership turned down the first "union recommended settlement" and after a short strike the membership was ordered back to work by the union before the membership even voted on a new settlement. The new settlement just barely passed.
I believe we have to stop the union from soliciting thousands and thousands of dollars every year from the contractors for everything from golf tournaments to a $10,000 a table fundraiser for a bulldozer going to Africa. This is just wrong! The membership is paying for this every time your agreement is up for negotiations, and the result is a poor collective agreement which we the members have to live with over and over again.
"Tender Out"
I believe we should be putting out for tender all of our Outsourced Services. Our union spends massive money on our Health & Legal Benefits, Insurance, Printing, Pension Money Managing, etc. I believe we should be putting all of these services out for tender to ensure the membership receives the best value for THEIR dollars. Just look again at the companies "donating" to the union. We all do this for our own financial responsibilities, and it is about time the union does the same with your money at least every three years.
